Climate Café: Protecting What We Love

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Climate Café series: We Protect What We Love.  This four-session series will welcome experts in the fields of energy use, climate science, sustainable food production, and how our calling as Christians can inform decisions about sustainable use of our God-given natural resources.  Our speakers are dynamic presenters, dedicated to making their expertise accessible to non-scientists.

Our series will carry us through the middle of the Season of Creation and to mid-Advent, the “new year” of the Church. Each evening’s agenda will begin at 6:30pm with a tasty potluck supper and fellowship. At 7pm, our featured speaker will make a presentation and then entertain questions.  The evening will wrap-up at 8pm.

Our September 25th gathering will feature Jean Ann Ramey, co-founder and senior VP at Synapse Energy Economics, where she helps guide Synapse in helping clients adapt to new challenges brought by shifts toward a cleaner energy industry.  Noting the need for ways to bridge the gap between good technical analysis and the plain language needed to connect with non-scientists, she founded the women-run, non-profit Climable in 2012 where she continues as an advisor. Read more about Jeannie.

October 16th features Cutler Cleveland, Professor of Earth and Environment and Associate Director of the Institute for Global Sustainability at Boston University.  He teaches environmental and energy topics, conducts research into the interconnections among energy, society, and the environment, and founded Visualizing Energy, a data-driven, online resource communicating scientific information about the link between sustainable energy and human well-being.  Read more about Cutler.

November 6th features our own Sonia DeMarta, board member of Climable, an organization that distills complex environmental and energy information into plain, easy-to understand language. Sonia holds a Master’s degree in environmental management, is founder of the Lexington Farmer's Market, worked at the Cousteau Society, Preserve, The Spoleto Festival, Whole Foods, and now owns From Seed to Supper, a personal chef business.  Sonia loves educating people about how our food choices affect our health and the world we live in.

December 11th features the Rev. Cathy Venkatesh, Priest-in-Charge at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Malden.  Before becoming a priest, Cathy worked in forestry research and forest ecology.  She has a deep appreciation for the rich variety of human cultures, religious expressions, and the natural world. She is looking forward to helping us wrap-up our series on the Advent theme of new beginnings.

Keep your eyes open for potluck sign-ups. Looking forward to seeing you!
